ARTS & CRAFTS
As I am principally a people photographer I am more interested in the artist or crafts person than the quality and or the distinctive products that they create. However quite often it is not always possible to separate those that create the work and the work itself because there is always something of the artist in their work and vice versa.
Modern DSLR cameras are a miracle of technology and I find that features such as their ability focus automatically a godsend as it leaves me free to concentrate on details such as my camera angle, framing and lighting in my effort to produce work of sufficient quality to pass critical eye of these artisans and to produce an image with a professional look.
However I never lose sight of the fact that my subject is always the most important element in the frame. Every person has a story, and every picture should tell part of that story.
The two most engaging powers of a photograph are to make new things familiar and familiar things new.
Photography must be integrated with the story.
James Wong Howeell
For me, the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity.
The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.
Photography is not about the thing photographed. It is about how that thing looks photographed.
